Bringing the gold standard of elite sport to everyday life

Health by Science was built by three Sports Science graduates who believed everyday people deserve the same evidence-based support as elite athletes — through physiotherapy in Edinburgh, personal training, and structured rehabilitation.

We started in commercial gyms. We chose a different path.

Why we didn’t stay in commercial gyms

We started our careers in large commercial gyms. Like many young coaches, it helped fund our university studies — but over time, something didn’t sit right.

Most commercial gym models rely on a simple truth: large numbers of members pay, and a significant proportion don’t attend. Financially, that works. From a public health perspective, it doesn’t.

We didn’t want to build a business around unused memberships. We wanted to build a system that helps people actually meet the minimum physical activity guidelines — particularly strength training, one of the most neglected pillars of health.

So we stepped away.

Where elite sport gets it right

In elite sport, physiotherapists and strength coaches work side by side — something we replicate through our physiotherapy in Edinburgh and personal training in Edinburgh.

Rehabilitation and performance aren’t separate — they’re part of the same system.

Progression is structured. Load is monitored. Strength underpins recovery. Return to performance is planned.

But outside elite environments, that collaboration is rare.

Hospital physiotherapy is often acute and time-limited. Personal training can lack clinical depth. Care becomes fragmented.

We believed everyday people deserved the same integrated model — not separate silos.

So we built one.

More than a gym. A complete model of care.

What began as personal training and small-group rehabilitation has evolved into a fully integrated model of care.

Today, Health by Science brings together physiotherapy in Edinburgh, personal training, Thrive rehabilitation classes, and sports massage in Edinburgh — all under one roof.

Each service strengthens the others.

Physiotherapy restores confidence and reduces pain. Strength training builds capacity. Thrive delivers structured group rehabilitation. Massage supports recovery. Counselling builds mental resilience.

The philosophy remains simple:

Recovery should lead to capability — not dependency.

We don’t chase quick fixes.
We build long-term change.

How we choose our team

Technical knowledge matters — but it isn’t enough.

Before joining Health by Science, coaches volunteer in our Thrive rehabilitation classes. We do this for one reason: therapeutic alliance. The ability to build trust, communicate clearly and genuinely care cannot be taught from a textbook.

We recruit for empathy first. Then we train deeply in our systems.

Our non-negotiables are clear: professionalism, scientific integrity, respect for the individual, and the courage to challenge ideas — not people.

Our coaches are personable and human, always grounded in evidence.

We don’t follow trends.
We follow principles.

A team that lives an active life

We’re not professional athletes. We’re people who value movement.

Across our team you’ll find basketball players, boxers, Muay Thai enthusiasts, volleyball players, rugby players and former footballers. Some of us have completed Ironman triathlons. Others kitesurf, compete, or train simply because they love to live actively.

What connects us isn’t the sport — it’s the belief that movement improves life.

We understand what it takes to train consistently. We understand injury and rebuilding. We understand the discipline of staying active when life gets busy.

That lived experience shapes how we coach.

Because for us, health isn’t theoretical. It’s how we choose to live.

Raising the baseline

Health by Science exists for a simple reason:

Too many people fall below the minimum physical activity guidelines — particularly when it comes to strength training.

We believe strength is not a luxury. It’s foundational.

It protects joints.
It supports mental health.
It builds resilience for work, family and life.

It’s to help people leave stronger than they arrived — physically and mentally, often beginning with a Movement MOT assessment.

Methods will evolve. Evidence will move forward.
But our principles remain the same:

Science-led.
Person-centred.
Built for real life.
